What did I learn?Wow...2011 is here and looking back I am amazed at what was accomplished and what I learned int his process.

What did I learn?

I learned that I need to let things evolve in their own way and in their own time. Sometimes I try to "force" the issue and things just don't work out; that is not how it is supposed to be.

I learned to not take "NO" for the final answer.

I learned that even though some people say it can't be done, it CAN BE DONE, if I want to do it strongly enough.

I learned that I do my best work "thinking outside of the box" and under pressure.

I also learned that I need to take one step at a time. And, I leaned that it does not mean that I can ONLY take one step, that I can take multiple steps, but it is one, after the other.

I learned more about my strengths, and my weaknesses and where I need assistance in getting my vision implemented.

But I have a lot to learn and that process will continue in 2011. I have lots of projects on my "vision tree" and hope to get more implemented this year.

This year a Publisher is a big goal for me. Maneuvering within the Publishing Industry is something new and foreign to me, but I can figure it out!
And to expand the Turbeaux "brand".

So, huge thanks to those who helped me learn these lessons last year, and thanks to those that helped me take those steps in implementing one of my "visions".

And of course, thanks to Turbeaux. The "T-Man" has been my strongest supporter..literally, I rest my feet on him while onthe computer. :-)TakeTurbeauxToo!http://www.blogger.com/profile/02762108529361502554noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2756708269217208455.post-57197106624020728532010-09-22T17:59:00.004-05:002015-06-01T16:00:29.636-05:00Payment Information

TakeTurbeauxToo!http://www.blogger.com/profile/02762108529361502554noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2756708269217208455.post-23886018081834436172010-09-18T02:26:00.004-05:002015-06-01T16:02:37.871-05:00in the beginning...Years ago, when I created the concept for Take Turbeaux Too! I had no idea how it would come to life, what form it would take, or IF it would even come to be. The story developed in my head soon after hurricane Katrina, after witnessing one of the largest animal rescue efforts in our Nation's history.

It amazed me, frustrated me, disappointed me, to see how many animals were left behind. It also frustrated me to see some that were taken with their owners, yet had no "social skills"; no clue how to travel, how to be an "inside dog", sleep in a crate, live in a hotel room or apartment without barking constantly; and some to learn to be walked on a leash. Mine were so acclimated to traveling that they never gave it a second thought. The three months that were outside of our home were much easier on the Shibas than on me. I whined, they didn't. I felt guilty about them being crated more than usual. I felt guilty about them not having a yard to romp in. But they were fine. I had to trust in them.

The thought to leave them behind never entered my mind. If I go...they go. Period. No discussion. No debate. No option. I remember at some point I whispered to Turbeaux:

No matter where we go
No matter what we do
of course we will always
Take Turbeaux Too!

And thus the journey began....

I had no clue how to go about writing a childen's book. And if I sat down and planned it out, it probably wouldn't have happened. I just let it work itself out. A wonderfully talented Animal Illustrator, Kellie Schneider, literally fell in my lap. I wanted the book out for the Summer of 2010 yet did not have a Publisher. So I went to a local printer that does alot of printing for the company I work for. They worked with me on the production. And social media has helped me get the word out.

If I really sat down and thought about this whole process it would have been overwhelming. But instead, I trusted Turbeaux (again) and let it just evolve into what it would become and let it take on a life of its own.

My sincere hope is that this book will get into schools, and places where Turbeaux can educate children into proper animal care. And IF they are faced with having to leave their home...for ANY reason...they can tell their parents:

No matter where we go
No matter what we do
of course we will always
Peters St, in New Orleans. This event is a fundraiser for a group of independent animal rescuers that are working wonders in New Orleans.

About a year ago they rescued a little Shiba girl from a local area shelter. She had many health issues, and had badly disfigured knees, needing double knee surgery. We were able to secure a discount with a surgeon that this group works with; we found her a great foster home and raised almost enough money for her surgery. The happy ending is that she was adopted by her foster family; she recovered beautifully from her knee surgery and is doing very well.

But she is one dog...there are many more, unfortunately. Including another Shiba girl, Takara, that needs the same surgery! She is still in their care, but will need a forever-home once her surgery is done. But the surgery can't be done without MONEY.

So come out Republic on S. Peters St., in the Warehouse District, on September 30th - 6:30-9:30.

Half of the proceeds from sales that night will go to this Organization!!
Kellie, the Illustrator will be there as well.
Because this is a human only event, Turbeaux can't attend, but he will be there in spirit.TakeTurbeauxToo!http://www.blogger.com/profile/02762108529361502554noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2756708269217208455.post-54361275000471055712010-08-29T10:50:00.003-05:002015-06-01T16:03:13.995-05:00K+5 = T3Today is the Fifth Anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. “The Thing”; “The K-word”, and other not-so-polite names have come to be used to describe the event; the event that changed so many lives forever. In our case, we were fortunate, more so than many people here in NOLA. We did not lose our home, we did not lose relatives, we did not lose our jobs. But everything else changed in a very surreal way.

I have not listened to the news this past week, I don’t feel I need to relive the event over and over again, like ripping off the scab of a wound “just because”. It is what it is, it did what it did; let’s learn from it and move on. But can we? Have we?

When we evacuated, as always, we took our Shibas with us. They are accustomed to traveling, hotels and long rides in the car. Many people did not take their pets. Some thought that we would be gone for a short time; others had pets that were not used to traveling and their people thought they would be better off at home than in a car or hotel room. Many others had no where to go with their pets. What followed was one of the largest, if not THE largest animal rescue deployments in our Nation’s history.

I can remember the questions from co-workers: “What do you with your dogs?”. “You take them ALL?”. “Where do you go with your dogs?”. All of these questions I always found surprising; we have never had a problem finding a place to go with our Shibas, and it is NEVER an option to not take them with us. If *I* go...they go...period.

The events that followed, the rescues, the attempts to devise evacuation plans that INCLUDED pets, were all inspiration for me to write Take Turbeaux Too! It was few years in the making, but finally, it is here. Although, to me, it is dedicated to the animals that “K” took, and the Rescuers that helped save so many, I did not want to just concentrate on Hurricanes. I believe that if you own a pet, no matter where you live, you need to be prepared in case of an emergency.

Earthquakes. Tornadoes. Flood. Fire. Oil Spill (oh yea that was us again!)

As Turbeaux says in the book : “Emergencies come in all shapes and sizes, be prepared so there are no surprises!”

It is not a pretty thought, it is not a happy thought, but something that should be considered: What do you TAKE? What will your pets NEED? Are you PREPARED? Have a plan ready. Just in case.

Take Turbeaux Too is a childrens book, and not a big scary one that relives that “K-thing” over and over. But I do know that children here in NOLA have recognized their situation in the book. We are more attuned to evacuating with pets, although that term is never used - we KNOW it, we FEEL it. It is what it is. It was my hope that by aiming the “tail” towards the Children, they can help educate their parents. No more pets left behind.
